On 21st June 2023, 'Arrival' will be performed by Anton Lukoszevieze and Heather Roche at Stoke Newington Old Church in London, UK as part of the St. Marks Rise Drone Society series of events.
ABOUT Arrival
Following his duo with Jeff Tobias (Tributaries), Jack Cooper’s latest foray into experimental composition—Arrival—is a stunning new piece showcasing Cooper's mastery of patience and restraint. Delicate harmonic textures that recall the work of composers such as Michael Pisaro, Jürg Frey and Antoine Beuger, it features three extraordinary players from the experimental scene: pianist Alexander Hawkins, alongside Anton Lukoszevieze (cello) and Heather Roche (clarinet) of stalwart contemporary music ensemble, Apartment House.
Arrival is a beautiful example of exploratory minimalism, showcasing the talents of three exceptional musicians and their ability to create beauty and complexity from simplicity and restraint. It's a bold and ambitious work that rewards repeated listening and contemplation.
JACK COOPER ON Arrival
"I've been making music along these lines for a few years for myself and as part of my own practice. As I started to teach myself more about notation, I began to feel more confident sharing what I'd been working on and received a lot of encouragement from composers I admire like Sarah Hennies, as well as Anton Lukoszevieze and Heather Roche from Apartment House and Alexander Hawkins; people that I'd met or corresponded with via my group Modern Nature.
The rhythm of the piece and the melodies are really secondary to the manner in which it’s performed. It’s a framework for collectivism… three instruments which are co-dependent. The music is really very simple, but the way it unravels and the communication that the score suggests is infinite. The rhythm of the melody is a spine... a shared objective.
This was recorded in the same way I record Modern Nature. Honestly and attempting to record the physicality of the instruments and the musicians… the room and the space between the musicians. It was recorded live to a two track tape machine."
